Episode 30: Misophonia, Prioritizing What’s Important, And Being A Messy Bessy With Ashlae Warner Of Oh, Ladycakes

Episode 30: Misophonia, Prioritizing What’s Important, And Being A Messy Bessy With Ashlae Warner Of Oh, Ladycakes

I already spilled the beans about this week’s guest on yesterday’s post…it’s the very cool Ashlae Warner of Oh, Ladycakes. But what you don’t know is just how many freaking topics we covered in this episode.

Ashlae and I talk about dealing with misophonia, a heartbreaking yet pivotal point in her relationship, her tips on creating more opportunities to travel, using food as medicine, her beef with Sur La Table, and our shared messy-bessy ways (that’s a nice way of saying we’re slobs).

Here’s Ashlae:

    Jessica!!

I l-o-v-e-d this episode! It was such a fun convo between you and Ashlaaaay. What I loved most was listening to you two talk about your relationships. I feel like I can relate to everything you said – I’m a complete mess, I’m always on Instagram during date night, and I totally have my very own “alley” in the corner of our bedroom! We also live in a studio apartment, so you can imagine how quickly those messes can grow.

Thank you, as always, for your funny, thoughtful and interesting podcast!

So I’m not just a terrible, weird person who despises when people make smacking noises when they eat, or who wants to strangle a co-worker who hiccups like an elephant? I had no idea Misophonia was a thing and I’m so glad that I have fellow members of the club who avoid situations where awful noise might be heard. Now my partner can maybe, a little bit understand when I shoot him the death stare when he makes a noise I want him to stop!

This was such a fun interview. I love Ashlae and have now discovered a new podcast. Nice work, both of you!

Jen, you are NOT a weirdo. Oh man, co-workers who hiccup like elephants? Best description ever! Thanks for joining our sound hating club and hope to see you at the movies on a random Tuesday…I won’t bring the popcorn. Thanks for listening!

Jessica, I love listening to your podcasts because they are just so damn relatable. Thank you for talking about Misophonia! I thought I was just a super irritable, nutty person! Gah, what a relief! I’ve been snapping at my mom for years for the little noises she makes. Hopefully she’ll understand now…

    I loved this one!
I seriously think i have misophonia – listening to other people eat is like torture. Crunchy snacks and foods absolute worst.

i love the touchpoints on healthy eating and how it eased her battle with endometriosis – i think its something we all can incorporate into our daily lives, and the biggest reason I follow OPP

keep up the fun interviews, theyve been awesome

Enjoyed this so much when I listened to it a few days ago…. Just thought about it again because I just had to leave the living room where my whole family was watching a movie because the sound of my sister chewing and swallowing nearly sent me over the edge. My sister actually sent me an article on misophonia a few months ago because I lose my sh*t on her every time I hear her drinking. The sound of her swallowing infuriates me. The struggle is REAL.

Julie, it is REAL! It’s not funny, but I read your comment and giggled to myself a little because it makes me happy that we can have a place to get our rage out! I also lose my shit when I hear certain family members drink too. Thanks so much for sharing here. And welcome to our little Misophonia club!

This was so great! Thank you for sharing. I totally want to give Ashlae a big hug– I knew that she’s had some health struggles but had no idea to what degree. My sister suffered from ulcerative colitis, too. Sucks.
And the relationship stuff… whew. Definitely a good reminder for one to always strive to be a more present partner.
    Thanks for the laughs, too.
High-fives to both you awesome ladies!

Loved this episode and its realness. With a sister and a Dad with misophonia – I often see the cyclical and escalating aspects of it. One person’s chewing, annoys the other person. And so on. We’ve learned to manage it, laugh at it and avoid it as a family… most of the time 😉 Glad you two ladies shed light on this topic!

Oh – And I’ve made Ashlae’s Easy No Bake Cookies a few times since this post – an automatic hit with my honey Joe!

    🙂

Allison, glad your family can laugh about it too! For some reason, it makes it easier to deal with. And so glad you made the cookies! All of Ashlae’s desserts are so damn good.

Just wanted to thank you so much for this podcast! I’ve recently discovered it and I cannot get enough of it, I’m totally addicted. Love your interviewing style, selection of guests and the topics you choose to discuss with such honesty! I listen to you when working and it makes my work so much more fun, makes me chuckle to myself the whole time (as if my neighbours didn’t think i was weird enough 😉 ) Thanks so much!! Ania (a fellow misophonic and I totally relate to ‘the alley’ story too ;P )
