Episode 50: Getting Your Hands Dirty + Pursuing What You Love Despite The Obstacles With Celestine Maddy Of A Wilder Life

Episode 50: Getting Your Hands Dirty + Pursuing What You Love Despite The Obstacles With Celestine Maddy Of A Wilder Life

Episode 50!!! Ok, technically there are more than 50 episodes if you count Freak Your Weeks…but this is the 50th long-form interview. Which is just nuts. Before I get to the guest, I want to thank you for being so supportive of the podcast. I love the cool club we’ve created together!

Our 50th guest is Celestine Maddy of the new book A Wilder Life! You got a sneak peak of it last week, and now you’ll get to hear all the nitty gritty details of how making this book went down.

Celestine and I talk about her life before she ventured outside (there were lots of video games involved), how getting your hands dirty can make you feel more grounded, why she decided to take a break from her magazine (Wilder Quarterly), and what nature, the gym, and Khloe Kardashian have in common (you might be surprised).

    Hey Jessica!

Just listened to this episode, another awesome one as always!

I just wanted to say I know about those spinal headaches, they are awful and super scary. My husband had to get a spinal tap after having a seizure for the first time, and he got spinal headaches after and had complications with the blood patch to fix it. The whole thing was super scary for me, and I wasn’t even the one going through it!! I’m happy to hear you are feeling better and some helpful realizations came out of the experience. Side note: the doctor did not tell us about the possibility of spinal fluid leak headaches. Which would have been so helpful, because I also thought he was going to die and was a nervous wreck.

Not to be a dork, but just about a week and half ago I had a realization that I’ve been closed off, shut down, pushing through for the last couple of years. I went to a place called Spirit Rock for a day retreat (first retreat ever) and it was very cool and very overwhelming. But I realized there that I haven’t given myself time to process my feelings, like really dive deep and get to the heart of them in a really long time. I’ve been listening to Jess Lively and You and a few other podcasts that have been so powerful for me. I think your birthday ritual is a great way to start.

    Lots of love to you!

Haley, thanks for this note. The Dr. didn’t tell me about the spinal headaches either! In super nerdy world…I was thinking about “writing a letter” to the ER – telling them they need to give people a heads up. It’s so scary!

And wow, your trip to Spirit Rock sounds incredible. Sometimes it takes getting away (or laying in bed) with no distractions to allow yourself to process things. Thanks so much for sharing this. Feel thankful for you. Thanks!!

I’m with you about writing a letter to the ER, I have lots of letters to write to hospitals (husband had a traumatic brain injury, that’s how everything started. he’s ok now). There was one doctor who did the blood patch and he was so kind and thoughtful and would stop in mid sentence to let me ask a question because he could see I wanted to ask one. I still need to write a letter to him and his supervisors or whoever to let them know he needs to be a speaker at hospitals on how to treat patients and that I’m super grateful to him. Sorry for the rant. But you should definitely write a letter and I’ll get mine out too. Also, did you have to get a blood patch or bed rest for several days and it went away on it’s own? And thanks for writing back, I know it takes effort and time.

Haley, It did go away eventually. Caffeine helps with the recovery (some people even get caffeine drips!). I’ve never drank so much green tea and Zevia in my life. I had to lay flat on my back for 3-5 days for the headaches to stop. So excited to be out of bed! And happy your husband is feeling great too.

Hi Jessica! I just discovered your podcast and website and it is the best discovery of the year! I’m becoming obsessed with health! Can you please make a podcast about Hpv and diets or ways to boost the Inmune system? It’s really hard to find info about it That is not medical and that talks about it in a scary way. I know There are hundreds of girls that have been through this but few now about all the positive changes and actions you can do after been diagnosed.
    Thanks!

Sofia, thanks so much for this sweet note. And a huge thanks for this topic idea. This is not something I don’t know a lot about, but do know a lot of women are affected by it. I’m going to do some research and find a great person to cover this topic. Thanks so much for the suggestion and excited to have a new friend in Argentina!

thank you so much! i will recommend one part plant to everyone I know. One of the few books that treat the subject the way it should be treated is http://www.amazon.com/Thank-You-HPV-healing-yourself/dp/0615649831/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1457666607&sr=1-1&keywords=thanks+for+hpv although it doesn’t talk a lot about the virus itself.
    thanks Jessica 😉

Hey Jessica! I wanted to leave you a comment about the intro on this episode. First, I’m glad you’re feeling better. That sounded really serious and scary. I think you’re very brave 🙂 But also I want to say WOW on the lessons learned. It got me thinking, I must remember that no matter how careful and consious I am with my lifestyle choices, I’m still gonna get sick, ’cause shit happens. And yeah, we need to roll with it (life) a bit more I guess. cheers!
