Episode 57: Confronting Past Traumas + Chinese Medicine Explained With Giselle Wasfie of REMIX

This week, Iโm talking to Giselle Wasfie. She’s a former hip hop journalist and current Chinese-medicine practitioner (acupuncturist-herbalist). She’s also the founder of the aromatherapy and beauty line REMIX by Giselle Wasfie. As I mentioned on the episode with Katrina Jane, this season I want to cover topics that sometimes have a little mystery surrounding them or lifestyles we think we know aboutโฆbut might not fully understand. This is one of those episodes.
Giselle and I discuss Chinese Medicine (what it is, how it works, and why itโs still not widely accepted as “real” medicine), how she knew being a journalist wasn’t her career path in life, her advice on looking at past traumas in a new light, and her biggest (and easy) tip on how to deal with toxic people and negative interactions in our lives.

by Giselle Wasfie
In a spray bottle mix the following ingredients
with 2 ounces of distilled water:
20 drops of MAY CHANG
Uplifting and bright, helps keep the mood light.
10 drops of PETITGRAIN
Relieves stress.
+ 5 drops of YLANG YLANG
Sedates adrenaline and relaxes the nervous system.
Giselle’s notes: I like to spray it pre-meditation or I’ve sold bottles to yoga teachers who use it before class for “grounding” while keeping the energy “uplifted” and flowing. I also use it in the clinic a lot (in between patients) to keep the mood upbeat and positive. Avoid using during pregnancy and avoid getting product in eyes.

September 1, 2016I’m pretty new to TCM. I just started in March but I’m loving it. I also love hearing other acupuncturists talk about how they do what they do. Thanks for the awesome interview!
Jessica
September 6, 2016Kelli, oh yes! So glad you enjoyed it and could hear part of your tribe talking. Thanks for listening!

September 12, 2016I loved this podcast and I’m so interested in trying acupuncture now! I can’t remember if you discussed how to find someone to go to for acupuncture (I thought you did!) – but do you have any recommendations for websites on how to find a provider? Thank you!!
Giselle
September 12, 2016Hi Margot! Glad you enjoyed the podcast! (It’s Giselle, by the way ๐
Jessica told me you wrote, and we did mention this briefly on the podcast; so essentially my recommendation would be to go to Yelp and search for an acupuncturist who has an L.Ac. degree (L.Ac. = Licensed Acupuncturist) and either an MSTOM or MSOM degree (MSTOM = Master’s Science Traditional Oriental Medicine; MSOM degree = Master’s Science Oriental Medicine).
Hope this helps! Good luck to you, hope you have a great experience with this amazing medicine. Best wishes, Giselle

November 17, 2016I loved this podcast! So enlightening. I’m fairly new to TCM, started acupuncture earlier this year (for fertility and anxiety), and it has already changed my life. I would love to hear a podcast about Giselle’s perspective of TCM and women’s health – specifically its role in balancing hormones and improving fertility. Thank you both!
Jessica
November 18, 2016Colleen, maybe part two! Giselle is SUPER skilled in fertility and has helped so many women. Thanks for stopping by and leaving the sweet note.

May 1, 2017Hi, I just found your podcasts (loving big time) and I just listened to this show, maybe too late to ask a question but I’m going to try anyway. I tried acupuncture several years ago to help with migraines but I stopped going because I just felt pain, not from the needles but my body just felt tight and sore and not relaxed I felt like I needed comfort and relaxing massage more than acupuncture. I’m a big believer in Chinese and Indian medicines but have never really gone back to them. I’m now suffering numerous issues which I’ve given up on my docs for and am seeing a nutritionist instead. The feelings I had for acupuncture, do many people say the same? I felt like it just didn’t suit me but I’m not sure if I should try again. I def have blocked energy, I feel like I’m having a slow breakdown and the migraines are still hanging around . Your show was fascinating and has reawakened my interest.thanks!!
Jessica
May 8, 2017Nici, hey! I’m going to alert Giselle to come over and answer this one! Stay tuned…

May 9, 2017Hi Nici! I would say that every person’s individual acupuncture experience is varied but your story leaves my puzzled. I would suggest trying again by seeking out a different acupuncturist and see if you have a different experience. At the end of the day, it’s still just an energy exchange, so maybe you just didn’t vibe with your first practitioner. You should certainly feel comforted and hopeful after an acupuncture treatment, though! Sending you the best wishes in finding the right person who can help you regain your health + balance. Giselle

May 8, 2017I just listened to this podcast and I can’t even tell you how many times I got goosebumps.
I sent it to my mom saying “I think the Universe is trying to tell me something” and then sent it to my husband saying “feeling inspired! (raising the roof hands emoji ๐
I’ve been contemplating what it is I’m supposed to make of this life, so listening to this felt so, so right. I’m still unsure of the direction I need to take, but I’m confirming my feelings now more than ever.
Also considering visiting Giselle in Chicago for a session of hers, how amazing would that be!
Keep up the amazing stories, I love listening! So happy I stumbled across your series.
Jessica
