I went to see Dr. Mark Hyman speak a few months back, and something that really stuck with me were his ideas on community and wellness. He believes that who you hang out with can affect your health just as much as your genetics. It’s sounded pretty bold at the time, but the more I thought about it, it really made a ton of sense.
So much sense, that it inspired me to launch a group series called Get Your Greens…a one month, plant-based journey for groups of friends or colleagues. To kick off the series I asked the women of Greer to get involved, and they said yes! Greer is a pretty magical store with a cool elegance that rubs off on you as soon as you step foot inside the door. Not only is the store itself great, but Chandra (the owner), Deborah, and Wendy always make you feel at home. They have so much fun together at work, I knew they would be an awesome team to launch the program.
We kicked off the series with a morning meeting (with smoothies), and I gave them the low down on plant-based eating with tips, recipe ideas, and even some homework. During the meeting, I learned that Chandra already had a pretty healthy diet, but wanted to take it to the next level by adding more veggie dishes to her repertoire. Wendy was the most enthusiastic and seemed up for anything. She was also exited to get her boyfriend involved. Deborah was the most apprehensive, but was willing to support the team and give it a whirl. But when I left the kickoff, I thought for sure that this cheese-lover was headed home to make a voodoo doll of me from a block of cheddar. And then eat it.
Over the weeks, we checked in from time to time via email, and I brought them a few plant-based treats. And at the end of the month, we met up again. It was so exciting to hear about all of their successes. Chandra mentioned that during her diet change, her heartburn disappeared and she didn’t have any breakouts. Deborah was happy and glowy! She said, “everything green comes home with me now,” and she finally got off the cheese. And then there was Wendy. Wendy kept a journal during the entire Get Your Greens month and gave it to me at the end. In it, you can see the evolution of her diet change – from being nervous to attend a family event to feeling really proud of her changes. Her journal was so special that it actually made me cry. I’m a Sensitive Sally.
Each of their months told a very different story, but the one thing that they all said was that it was the support of their friends, family, and each other that helped them succeed. Wendy summed it up like this: “A huge part of our success is due to our support systems at home and work. We are surrounded by people who have open minds and are willing to support us, and even those who didn’t fully understand were supportive. We are a family here at Greer and all feel that the positive and encouraging support from our “Greer girls” made this journey as fun and easy as a vegan apple pie (no lie, five ingredients)!”
